When John Hendrix, an illustrator I completely admire (and a person I really like!) contacted me about being a part of ICON's new promotional materials I was pleased as punch. As a member of the illustration community, nothing could be more thrilling than helping promote their leading conference in America. John chose Chris Buzelli and I to work collaboratively on the artwork, as the year’s conference theme was "Drawn Together". We came up with the idea of the moths for a few reasons — because moths are drawn to light and we saw the conference as being the beacon that brings a bunch of illustrators together. Also, the event was being held in Providence and RISD has a famous lab full of taxidermied creatures for students to draw from. I was inspired by the Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta for the lettering. We were really able to collaborate on the "Drawn Together" lettering, as Chris did the sketch and I did the final.
